GDV Tiger Woods: A Fraud

When it was reported that Tiger Woods was in an accident at 2:25 AM, you just knew that life as he knew it was over. However, no one could have predicted the magnitude of what was to follow. His indiscretions were not simple lapses in good judgment. His dalliances appear to be a long-standing way of life for a man most thought to be the most idealistic athlete in history. Make no mistake: Tiger is not the first or last wealthy, powerful man to be unfaithful. His cheating ways put him on a long… Continue

GDV Michael Vick's Future in NFL

I am a dog lover. My life has consisted of four Great Danes, a Rough Collie, and a Shih Tzu. Each dog remains logged in my memory bank from different times of my life. One of my most heartbreaking memories is when a Dane died in my arms. Another dog memory is loosing my Shih Tzu when a woman broke my heart and left me. She got the dog. I miss that little dog. So, like many, when I learned of Michael Vick’s heinous crimes, I was appalled. Send him to jail and throw away the key! However, now tha… Continue

GDV Cooperstown and the Business of Baseball

If you’re a baseball fan who has never been to Cooperstown, it is a must atop your “bucket list.” This quaint, cozy little town in upstate New York will be abuzz this weekend, as tens-of-thousands of fans make the pilgrimage to baseball’s shrine – The National Baseball Hall of Fame. And make no mistake, the sound of cash registers ringing along Main Street and in the Hall of Fame shop will be music to the ears of baseball’s sacred community. Induction Weekend is critical to the town and its bas… Continue

GDV Baseball Card History

by Jeff Figler, Collectibles Editor, HOFN.com As baseball cards have become a part of American tradition and folklore, it is interesting to see how its evolution developed. A thumbnail sketch is as follows. It is hard to imagine that baseball cards were first issued in 1887 by a few of the existing tobacco companies of that era. A New York company, Goodwin & Company, issued the N172 series in Old Judge and Gypsy Queen cigarette packs. More than 500 players are pictured, and as some players… Continue

GDV Lakers' Greatest Players

If you were watching NBA basketball during the JFK, LBJ, and Nixon presidential era, you must have fallen off your chair when ABC/ESPN broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy recently proclaimed Kobe Bryant the greatest Lakers’ player of all-time. Hell, he doesn’t even make my top four (yet). What makes Van Gundy’s comment even more surprising is that he was born in 1962 and comes from a basketball family. His father, Bill, was head coach at Brockport State University, so I know he recalls the names West an… Continue

GDV NBA Playoffs: For Real Basketball Fans

Friday, April 17, 2009 Send the college hoopsters back to school for their finals and “bracket fans” (posing as basketball fans) back to whatever they do during the regular basketball season. March Madness is over and the real basketball season begins. It’s NBA Playoff time. The greatest athletes in the world, a.k.a. professional basketball players, begin their quest for that elusive ring and NBA glory. Not everyone can boast of 11 or six rings as can Bill Russell and Michael Jordon, respectiv… Continue

GDV Jordon Gets HOF Call...But Where's Artis Gilmore?

Sunday, April 12, 2009 The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame recently announced its 2009 Induction Class – and it could be one of its greatest classes ever. Hell, anything in basketball including Michael Jordon’s name has to be considered one of the best. Joining Jordon are fellow players David Robinson and John Stockton, plus Coaches Jerry Sloan and Vivian Stringer. And while all may be deserving of this great honor, I continue to wonder why Artis Gilmore has been the forgotten man in… Continue

GDV Curt Schilling: A Hall of Famer?

Wednesday, March 25, 2009 Curt Schilling: A Hall of Famer? Since the announced retirement of Curt Schilling, the question du jour is whether or not he should be voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. My initial, knee-jerk reaction was no. However, I’m now having second thoughts. I am not a stat machine, so if you’re looking for all the numbers, you can look ‘em up on numerous sites. However, what I do know is that Schilling has 216 wins; six all-star appearances; one World Serie… Continue

GDV Little Interest in World Baseball Classic

Classic: highest in quality; of enduring interest; noteworthy – worth remembering; traditional event. Thank God the dictionary includes traditional event in the definition of classic, or I wouldn’t understand what the World Baseball Classic meant. Of course, we all know the World Baseball Classic has begun, right? Japan opened the event versus China in the wee hours of the morning in the U.S. I set my alarm for 4:30 a.m. so not to miss the fist pitch. Ya, right. I’m sure the “Classic” will gai… Continue

GDV NBA All-Star Game A Farce

Tuesday, February 17, 2009 It was easy for basketball purists to be appalled by the NBA All-Star fiasco that occurred in Phoenix. However, I’ll go beyond simply the purists – and suggest even the average basketball fan thought the game and pre-game show was a farce. I realize all-star games are solely for entertainment purposes and another cash cow for professional leagues. Of the four major sports, MLB is the most pure all-star event, with the NFL and NHL simply a half-speed showcase for thei… Continue

GDV The Baseball Hall of Fame Dilemma

Friday, February 13, 2009 Quick…what is the current MLB record for home runs? Be truthful, did you instantly know that Barry Bonds has 762? For years, the number 714 was embedded in our baseball brains. Babe Ruth held the home run record from 1935 until April 8, 1974, when Aaron hit #715. Hammerin’ Hank ended his career with 755. Most also remember that number, but I’m not sure Bonds’ record has resonated in the same manner. Ruth’s single season home run record of 60 lasted 34-years until Mar… Continue

GDV Report: A-Rod Tested Positive for Steriods

SI.com has reported Alex Rodriquez tested positive for an anabolic steroid and testosterone in 2003. Rodriguez chose not to comment to a SI.com reporter. He stated, “You’ll have to talk to the Union.” Is anyone really surprised? It’s disappointing, but not surprising. The only negative is that we’ll now be talking steroids again rather than the enjoyment of Spring Training. So, we now have the greatest home run-hitter of all time, arguably the greatest pitcher of all-time (at least of his time… Continue

GDV MLB Spring Training Lures Snowbirds

Floridians and Arizonans…prepare for the migration of snowbirds. Forget Groundhog Day and the folklore of the groundhog predicting spring. And no true baseball fan really believes spring begins March 20th this year. Spring commences when MLB team equipment trucks leave for Florida and Arizona. For baseball fanatics living in cold-weather climates, spring training is their annual hope that freezing temperatures and snow begone – with the sound of baseballs off wooden bats music to their ears.… Continue

GDV Super Bowl Malaise

Saturday, January 24, 2009 Super Bowl Malaise I look forward to attacks from my regular critics regarding this post. I’m sure claims of being a “homer” and provincial will be forthcoming. Let the comments fly… I am indeed a card-carrying Patriots fan, but I used to root for the Chargers, too, before all their recent whining. Also, hard for even me to believe, I was once an avid New York (football) Giants’ fan back in the 50s and early 60s. Am I simply looking through my Patriots-colored glass… Continue

GDV Miracle on Hudson, Near Misses Revisited

New York Governor David Paterson couldn’t be more accurate when describing the crash of US Airways flight 1549 by calling it, “a miracle on the Hudson.” Believe me, this was indeed a miracle. Watching the video of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger crash-land into the Hudson River was truly remarkable. That everyone onboard survived is equally amazing. As I watched this incredible event, I reflected on my airline near-misses and the many frightful moments experienced during my numerous years… Continue
